Music and Play Therapy Team

Austin Shugart

Hello! My name is Austin and I’m a music therapist from the USA! I graduated with my Bachelor’s of Science in Music Therapy from Texas Woman’s University. I have worked in a variety of settings with both adults and children, including clinics, juvenile detention centres, paediatric facilities, hospitals, and in-home based care. My primary focus has been working with children and young adults with various physical and mental disabilities.

I’ve always been interested in music since I was young, and upon discovering music therapy, I learned what a vast world music therapy can encompass. Taking non-musical goals and making them musical so that they are easier to achieve was not as easy of a task as I thought it would be; however, the more I learned about psychology and how music can be used as an avenue to explore said psychology, the more I wanted to know everything I could know about it!

As a music therapist, I have experienced significant personal growth through my work. Music has not only been my profession but also my constant companion on my journey of self-discovery and development. Through the process of creating music, both individually and with others, I have cultivated resilience, empathy, and a deeper understanding of human connection. These experiences have shaped me into the compassionate and dedicated therapist I am today, fueling my passion for helping others unlock their potential through music.

In my work with students and adults, I have seen how music therapy can be a catalyst for growth and transformation. For children with developmental disabilities, music provides a safe and engaging medium for communication and self-expression. Through rhythmic activities, improvisation, and songwriting, I have witnessed these individuals discover new ways of expressing themselves, building confidence and self-esteem in the process. Similarly, with adults facing mental health challenges or navigating life transitions, music therapy offers a path towards healing and empowerment. Whether through guided relaxation techniques, lyric analysis, or group drumming exercises, music has the ability to soothe anxieties, alleviate stress, and promote self-awareness. I have seen clients discover inner strength and resilience as they engage with music in therapy, finding solace and inspiration in its harmonious melodies and rhythms.

I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of those I work with, and with the help of my fellow therapists, educators, families, and community, I hope to reshape the way we view disabilities. I want to help us focus on the ABILITIES that each and every one of us possess, and get to know each other for who we are as unique and growing individuals.
