Making Connections: How Connect the Thoughts Supports Literacy and Cognitive Development

Introduction

Games are powerful tools in educational therapy — not just for engagement but for targeted skill-building. One of my favourite resources is Connect the Thoughts, a versatile card game I have adapted into a rich multisensory activity to develop cognitive flexibility and literacy skills. While it begins as a simple matching game, it becomes so much more in my sessions.

From Matching to Meaningful Learning

To keep the activity focused and developmentally appropriate, I begin by limiting each round to 5–7 cards. This structure ensures that students are not overwhelmed and can stay engaged throughout. We play multiple rounds based on the child’s ability. What starts as a fast-paced matching or connection task evolves into a springboard for language work. By adapting the game’s content to suit the learner’s ability, I can support a range of skills from phonics to expressive writing.

Literacy Extensions Based on Ability

Once the game rounds are complete, we shift into literacy-based activities using the images from the cards as visual prompts.

Spelling, Sentence Building, and Paragraph Writing

Depending on the child’s profile, here’s how I build on the game:

  • Spelling: The student identifies images and spells the corresponding words aloud or in writing.

  • Descriptive Writing: We explore adjectives and sensory words to describe selected images, strengthening vocabulary and expression.

  • Sentence Construction: The images become prompts for forming simple to complex sentences, supporting syntax, grammar, and sequencing.

  • Paragraph Writing: For more advanced learners, the cards become anchors for narrative or expository paragraphs. The visual support helps with idea generation and coherence.

These extensions promote literacy and create opportunities for oral language development, memory work, and creative expression—all within a safe, gamified environment.

A Game with Endless Possibilities

Connect the Thoughts proves that a simple card game can offer powerful learning opportunities when intentionally adapted. By limiting the cognitive load, embedding structure, and extending gameplay into writing activities, I can support a wide range of learners in an enjoyable and impactful way. Whether students are spelling a duck, describing a balloon, or writing a paragraph about a clock, the possibilities are limitless, and the connections are significant.
